George Paterson was born in Denny, near Falkirk, in Stirlingshire, Scotland. He won two full Scotland caps, one either side the Second World War. He played 175 times for Celtic scoring 11 goals, and also played for Brentford. He spent a couple of years in Somerset, winning the Somerset Professional Cup twice in 1949/50 and 1950/51 before returning north to manage Stirling Albion. In later life he worked for Celtic in a variety of roles, including scout and trainer, before emigrating to New Zealand, where he died in 1985 aged 71.
