Mike Hughes became the youngest Yeovil manager to date when he was appointed at only 28 years old. There were severe financial difficulties around Huish, and the future of the club was in jeopardy. He made some very good signings of players that were unknown to the supporters, but went on to serve the club well. Around him civil war raged between board, supporters club and a new supporters group that had been created. Many calls for unity were largely ignored.

Born in Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire in September 1940, the midfielder had joined Cardiff City. He only made 1 appearance before moving on to Exeter City. He settled at Chesterfield though, and made over 200 Football League appearances. He managed at Yeovil for 3 years winning the Southern League title in 1970/71, before leaving for a coaching role at Torquay United. He returned as caretaker manager in 1983, but didn’t win a game in his nine games in charge. He was the first caretaker manager  of the Glovers.
